Texas family law is complicated. While it is possible to handle your own divorce case, we don't recommend it. Why not? Because if you make a mistake, it can be quite costly. We had a gentleman come in a few years ago that had handled his own divorce case. The only problem was, after it was over, his ex-wife demanded that he give her one-half of his business. He thought that he would own his business outright after the divorce; that's why he agreed to give her more than one-half of their other property.
After reviewing the divorce decree that the two of them had prepared themselves, we determined that his ex-wife had a good case, because the divorce decree was written improperly. The intent was that the husband was to receive the business in the divorce, but that is not what the divorce decree said. Had he only spent some money on an attorney to represent him, he would have avoided an enormous headache, and the need to buy his ex-spouse out from his business.
