The Internal Revenue Service has done something good! They have a new feature on their website that will help people get information from them, quickly. Taxpayers can obtain a number of IRS records online, quickly, with no fee, absolutely free. For example, taxpayers can now obtain tax return transcripts, tax account transcripts, and wage and income (W-2's and 1099's, for example), right on their website.

This can be important if you are one of our bankruptcy or I.R.S. clients in the Houston area, and we need records from you in order to help you deal with the IRS. You can go to the IRS "Get Transcript" tool and get what you need for us, very quickly. If you ever forget what the link is, just go the the I.R.S. website at www.irs.gov and type in "Get Transcript" in the search box.

For our IRS or bankruptcy clients, we usually want the IRS "Record of Account Transcript" for each tax year that you owe money for, or for the last 4 years. If you haven't filed tax returns for certain years, you will want to obtain your "Wage and Income Transcripts" which will show all the W-2's and 1099's that were reported to the IRS. This makes it easy to prepare the delinquent tax returns quickly, and know for sure that all the income is included.

Thanks to the IRS for this great tool. I know they don't get a lot of appreciation, but this was a good thing. Anything to be more consumer-friendly is good, and this makes it easy to get needed information from them.
