Mr. Black Participated in Houston Bar Association "LegalLine" Free Legal Advice Telephone Outreach Program

Posted on Mar 21, 2013

I'm proud to be a member of the Houston Bar Association (HBA) because they sponsor so many volunteer, pro bono and outreach activities in the Houston and Harris County area.

I participated last night in LegalLine, a community service outreach program of the HBA that has served the Houston area since 1985. It is a free legal advice telephone hotline that is designed to help the public get simple legal advice, answers to legal questions and referrals to helpful resources over the telephone. All calls are answered by licensed attorneys.

LegalLine is held twice a month on the first and third Wednesday of every month, from 5pm to 9pm, and is open to all Harris County residents. To reach a volunteer attorney call 713-759-1133.

I was particularly proud to be an HBA member last night, because even though I managed to answer 10 citizen calls in the two hours that I was on duty, it was difficult to answer calls fast enough before they were answered by my fellow attorneys! And there were 10-12 attorneys working my "shift." I answered calls and gave simple advice about family law, consumer law, landlord tenant, credit and collections issues, and other calls.

By the way, attorneys are not permitted to give out their names to callers or refer any of the callers to a specific law firm; this is "pro bono" or for the public good, only. It was a very satifying experience and I look forward to participating again in LegalLine.
