Going through a bankruptcy is not pleasant, but if you have to, you have to. If you've been through a bankruptcy, you may think that you will never be able to get a mortgage to buy a home, particularly if you've had a foreclosure at the same time as the bankruptcy.
These days, even though a chapter 7 bankruptcy can stay on your credit for 10 years from filing date, and chapter 13 for 7 years, the mandatory waiting period to apply for a mortgage backed by Fannie Mae or the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is only two to four years.
In fact it is even possible to apply for an FHA loan while you are in chapter 13 bankruptcy, so long as you have been on your plan for at least one year, and have paid all of your trustee payments timely.
But as stated in a recent New York Times article, just because you are able to apply doesn't mean it is a good idea to apply until you are ready and have your credit in shape. You don't want to be saddled with a high interest rate. You should do what you can to repair and rebuild your credit first, in order to get the best interest rate that you can.
