Only something like 12% of property owners protest the appraised values of their property each year. It's easy, and if you care about how much your house payment is (if it's an "escrowed") loan, you should care a lot about the appraised value of your house!
If you're in Harris County, you can even file your protest online, and even settle your case online. Go to http://www.hcad.org/default.asp . Or, if you are too busy to do it yourself, or just want a professional to do it for you, there are services that handle it for you. Patrick O'Connor's firm is probably the largest in town, you can reach them at http://www.cutmytaxes.com/property_tax_overview.asp
I use Mr. O'Connor's firm, they only charge you if they save you money, and you pay them 50% of what they save you. If they save you, say, $150, you pay them $150. It doesn't sound like much, but if you protest every year like I do, over time it really helps to hold your property taxes down.
And if you're afraid about when you sell the house, that it will affect how much you can sell the house for, that's just not true. It's better to save the money now. Many of my clients in bankruptcy are not aware (or were not until I told them) about protesting their tax appraisals, and that is one reason they are in trouble; they are paying more in property and school taxes than they have to. My advice: protest your property taxes each and every year.
